GPS and home garaging. That is a combination for disaster. How is that??? Look at the rules of the game. They are stacked against you from the gitgo. First you have to get your computer up, pickup your first work task, and then deliver the truck, materials, tools, and technician to the first work site; for free. That is easily 30 minutes to maybe 45 minutes working for free on your part. Then at the end of the day you are required to deliver the truck, materials, tools, and technician back to the "garage" for free. Same 30+ minute scenario; for free. Let's see, that is an hour or more per day you are working for free. All at the OT rate of pay. Now for those that live more than 25 miles from home it might make sense to home garage. OOPs, forgot, home garage is not available to those that live more than 25 miles, as the crows fly, from the normally assigned work center. Folks there is no advantage to home garage unless you just absolutely don't own an automobile. Even at the three dollar price of gas the loss of OT and exposure to GPS scrutiny far outweigh the savings. What are the rules of home garage and GPS? How do they fit in the workplace? They fit well. They fit Embarq's purpose. Rules? The rules are clear. If your supervisor is adamant about the rules, on this one, thank him or her. From the directors up, there is a huge push to have these rules followed. Folks, we are being watched like bacteria under a microscope. First work location, is where you are dispatched; be there at 8, sharp. Not where you pick up material or where you want to "dial in." Be inline with each job as you work through the day. Last task, clear from the job location, not someplace you think is OK. First line supervisors have looked the other way for a long time. Not anymore. They are being watched also. Speaking of rules. Can you run by mom's on the way home? GPS says you'll have to explain. Can you stop by a store for a thirty minute milk and bread shopping spree? GPS says you will have to explain. Can you stop by the club for a little chit chat or feed the dogs? GPS says you will have to explain. Can you work through your lunch hour and roll it out while sitting at home? GPS says you are dead!!!! Supervisors have emailed and continue one on one to voice the need to adhere to the GPS environment. How do you stay out of harms way? Eliminate the clear and dangerous rules. Stop home garage!! Park that demon. Get it off your back. Enough said. Foxx Underwood and Ben Darfunken |
